Customer Review: Excellent in value and fulfills its purpose

I've purchased several sets and using one set in my kitchen for many months now.
Justification of the 5 star rating: Compare to other sets, this set has a good collection of knives plus additional tools. For instance, few other sets include a cleaver. It fulfils its mission well for everyday kitchen use, and shines on value. The utensil set and the measuring cups can probably be sold at the price Amazon is (was) asking for the whole knife set. The five star rating is for combined function and value. I understand some reviewers give it two or three stars comparing it with much more expensive knife sets ignoring the price difference, but it is not the scale I'm using here.
Build quality: The block I received are somewhat not consistent in color and pattern, less consistent than the one shown on the picture. It may show a bit trace of glue. It is nevertheless smooth and shows no rough edges. It doesn't look cheap in my opinion. Knives are made from stainless steel with reasonable weight (again, doesn't feel cheap). The handles are well shaped but fit and finish is not top quality (e.g. plastic and steel transition is not totally smooth), but solid. None of them wobbled or fall apart (at this price, I won't be surprised if that happens). The utensil container looks good and is still shiny after many months. Utensils are of average quality, which are good for daily use. The spatular seems to be too flexible for me. Measuring cups and tools are very nice, no sharp edges and has good solid feel.
Sharpness: The knives are not very sharp out of the box. The sharpening steel is not very effective as others have pointed out. It still works though, and after sharpening, the knives are reasonably sharp. I do use another chef's knife which is sharper, but the chef's knife in this set is usable if one doesn't have high expectation (I don't like the shape of the chef's knife much, a personal preference). I also have another sharpening steel.
Collection: It has almost all of most used knives. Cleaver is nice and the tomato knife slices very well. Steak knives, oh well, are OK, but I never use them cut steaks. Instead, find some other use that need small knives.
Conclusion: This set probably doesn't fit in an upscale kitchen, but adequate on utility and shines on value.
